Moving Average Crossover Strategy Explained
Updated: 2026-09-17
Crossovers are simple and that is both their strength and their weakness. Used raw they lose in ranges; used as a filter they make almost every other tool sharper.
Choosing the averages
On one to five minute charts an exponential pair such as 9 and 21 reacts fast enough to be useful while still smoothing single-candle noise.
Adding a slow average, for example 100 periods, as a trend filter removes most of the losing crossovers because it tells you which side of the market to take.
Avoiding whipsaws
A crossover in a flat market is meaningless. Require the averages to be visibly separated and sloping before accepting a signal.
Skip crossovers that happen inside the last hour of a session or immediately after news — both produce reversals that look identical to trends until they fail.
Using it as a filter
The most profitable use is not entry but permission: only take signals in the direction of the slow average, whatever your entry tool is.
